23 Things and Core Values FAQ

How does this program work?

23 Things App State is a lot like the other versions of 23 Things floating around out there in Library Land.  It is a self-directed program which encourages people to learn about various technologies and technology concepts at their own pace in their own way.   We are asking you not to read a bunch of pages about technology, nor attend a boring lecture, but we want you to explore these technologies and experiment with them yourself to understand how they work.  We'll get you started each month, but the rest will be up to you?

The first Thing will be blogging and you will be asked to create a blog which you will then use for the rest of the 23 Things and the Core Values to provide feedback, thoughts and commentary and allow us to see how you're doing.

How long do I have?

For most Things, you will have 2 weeks to learn about it and provide feedback on your blog.  There will be a few questions each week to help direct you on what to write.

For each Core Value, you will have an entire month, and the type of activity will vary from month to month.  For instance, in November, the theme is Inclusiveness, and we have identified 4 different activities that the campus is hosting that month.  Attend 3 out of the 4, write up your impressions of each event, and you're done!

Will this take a lot of time?

No, it should only take about an hour or two maximum for each Thing, and you have two weeks in most cases to complete the activity. The other Core Value activities will also not require a huge committment of time, in most cases a few hours out of the month.

Will there be fabulous prizes?

Of course! For completing the first of the 23 Things, you will receive a certificate for a free cup of coffee.  At the end of the 23 Things, there will be a drawing for an iPad.  At the end of the Core Values, there will be a drawing for a season ticket to the Appalachian Summer Series.

If I am having trouble with a Thing, who do I call?

Since the point of the 23 Things program is to learn these tools and concepts through use and everyone participating will be working on the same Thing at roughly the same time, we encourage you to work with your fellow team members to figure it out.

Who gets the credit for this idea?
The original 23 Things concept and training program originated with Helene Blowers and the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
